AMARO EROICO

THE LEGEND OF "AMARO EROICO"

Guiscardo's troops were camped for the night around the Norman Tower of Altomonte. Once again Princess Gaita was by her Lord's side

- Roberto d'Altavilla, Duke of Puglia, Calabria and Sicily -

as a wife but above all as a war adviser and skilled leader.

Legend has it that that night a small group of monks, housed in the church of Santa Maria dei Franchi, helped Princess Sichelgaita, who was an expert herbalist, to prepare her long-life Elixir to restore the troops before the battle.

The princess, as a sign of gratitude, invited the monks to stay in the village and gave them the secret recipe of her Elixir as a gift.

No one could ever imagine  that the first Benedictine settlement in Altomonte has been developed by that group of monks,

led by Fra Delfino, giving rise to the long monastic and alchemical

tradition of the village.

The Long-Life Elixir Sichelgaita, one of the "Mulieres Salernitanae"

and expert herbalist, it was an infusion based on Mediterranean herbs combined with peel of cedar, lemon and bitter oranges.

This recipe was developed by the monks over the years within the different monastic orders followed one another in the convent of Altomonte, reaching up to the present day.

Our Amaro Eroico is born from the elaboration of that ancient and secret recipe,

a journey of the senses through time, the history of a centenary tradition,

original and authentic celebration of the Mediterranean essence.
